PRODUCT FAMILY

Polarizers

Linear polarizers transmit one polarization state while attenuating the orthogonal state.

Visible and infrared families support polarization analysis, contrast enhancement and source cleanup, with aperture, extinction ratio and usable wavelength range selected by model.

SELECTION QUESTIONS

Polarizers FAQ

Technical answers to the questions that most often affect model selection.

What is the difference between a polarizer and a wave plate?
A polarizer selects or analyzes a polarization state. A wave plate introduces phase delay between orthogonal components to rotate linear polarization or convert between linear and circular polarization. Many systems use both elements together.
Should I use a half-wave or quarter-wave plate?
A half-wave plate rotates linear polarization when its fast axis is oriented correctly. A quarter-wave plate converts between linear and circular or elliptical polarization. The specified retardance applies at a defined wavelength and temperature range.
Which specifications control polarization performance?
Verify wavelength, clear aperture, retardance or extinction ratio, wavefront, surface quality and angular alignment. High-power systems should also check absorption, coating damage threshold and whether a contacted, air-spaced or multi-order design is appropriate.
