How Each One Works
An anti-reflective coating is a stack of thin transparent layers, each a fraction of a wavelength thick, tuned so the light waves reflecting off different layers cancel each other out through destructive interference. Less light gets reflected, and more gets through — an AR-coated surface can pass over 99% of light at the target wavelength.
Anti-glare glass takes the opposite approach: instead of reducing the total amount of reflected light, it roughens the surface with a fine texture, through etching or a diffusing coating, so reflections scatter in many directions instead of bouncing back as a sharp mirror image. The glare becomes less noticeable, but the total reflected light is roughly the same — it's just spread out.
