Why Thinner Glass Bends
Glass doesn't become a different material at ultra-thin gauges — it's still brittle. What changes is the stress a given bend puts on the surface: thinner glass under the same curvature experiences far less surface strain, so it can flex to a small radius without the surface flaws that trigger cracks. That's why a sheet under roughly 0.1 mm can wrap around something the width of a pencil, while a 2 mm sheet of the same glass will simply snap.
How It's Made
Most ultra-thin glass is produced by a fusion-draw or down-draw process, where molten glass is drawn into a continuous thin ribbon and cooled under controlled tension. Because the surfaces form in free space rather than touching rollers or molds, the finished glass comes out fire-polished — smooth enough for many applications without additional grinding or polishing.
